Personal Stories: Dennis Francis Lavita, Sr

Hello Brian,

I happened to come across your article on the internet.  Thanks for the informative information.  I am a 34-year-old female whose father (best friend) just passed away recently from Aortic Dissection.  He was 59 years old.  I am having a very hard time dealing with his death since it was so sudden.

He was taken to a local hospital in Somerville, Massachusetts in the evening of January 2, 2008 complaining of very severe chest, abdomen and back pain.  After being there a few hours, he was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital upon reviewing scans they had run.  They came to the realization that his major blood vessel had a tear in it.

He arrived at MGH around 10p.m. that night.  They were supposed to perform the surgery that night and they put it off.  They were then supposed to perform it in the morning, and again, was delay.  They finally took him back about 4:10p.m. on January 3, 2008.  They pronounced him dead at 5:41p.m. without performing the surgery.  He passed away from a cardiac arrest

I am so hurt and angry right now. I am left to wonder why surgery wasnt performed when they had the chance.  My father literally bled to death internally.

Reading your article has made me more aware of just how serious this condition is.  I will be contacting you shortly to get some more information regarding this.

My drama of life and death happened on the 6-6-06.How about those numbers folks.I was home alone that evening about to ring a friend when I began to blackout.Luckily I pressed the emergency number before I lost conciousness. From the information I gathered later the ambulance guys found me laying face down minus two front teeth and clinically dead. Within 15 minutes of being bundled into the ambulance I was in the ER of my local Fremantle hospital and not long after being prepped for surgery.Again as luck would have it a cardiac surgeon was on hand to perform his trade. 10 hours later and in a coma I was to remain in for two weeks I was wheeled into ICU with seven new knife wounds including the zip down the middle of the chest. Waking from the coma after two weeks was really weird as I had no memory of how or why I was in the hospital nor could I ask because the tube in my throat prevented speech.
My daughter and baby grandson where at my bedside and she gave me a brief rundown on what had been happening and what it was that had landed me in hospital.Apparently a genetic defect that had taken 64 years to make itself known. After a further week in ICU and the most fantastic caring staff looking after me I was moved to the ward area for a further two weeks until I was able to walk a kilometer
unaided.Reaching that objective was painful and difficult but eventually I was discharged and sent home. As a Veteran I was able to call upon various ancillary staff to help with my rehabilitation which took about twelve months of often painful exercises.
Now here I am 4 years down the track and enjoying my now five grandkids and life in general.
