Personal Stories: Margaret Thieler

MY NAME IS MARGARET THIELER , I AM 47 YEARS OLD. ON A VERY COLD WINTER NIGHT IN JANUARY I ALL OF A SUDDEN FELT VERY STRANGE, FIRST IT WAS IN MY HEAD MY LEFT EYE WENT COMPLETELY BLACK THEN MY HEAD STARTED TO SPIN THEN THE CHEST PAIN AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH CAME , I WOKE MY HUSBAND TO CALL AN AMBULANCE AS I THOUGHT I WAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK, BY THE TIME THE AMBULANCE GOT HERE I WAS TOTALLY PARALYZED FROM MY BREAST DOWN, THE PUT ME ON A STRETCHER AND TOOK ME TO OUR LOCAL HOSPITAL.

MY BLOOD PRESSURE WAS SO LOW I KNEW I WAS GOING TO DIE, AFTER BEING EXAMINED, THE ER DR. MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO LIFE FLIGHT ME TO PITTSBURGH,PA., PRESBY HOSPITAL, IT WAS ABOUT MIDNIGHT ON JAN. 17 AFTER 12 MINUTES IN FLIGHT I WAS THERE THEN SO MANY DR.S CAME WITH QUESTIONS I WAS VERY CONFUSED AND TALKING IN RIDDLES, MY FAMILY ALL ARRIVED IN ABOUT AN HOUR I KNEW THEY WERE THERE, THEN THE NEXT THING I REMEMBER WAS BEING PUT IN AN MRI THEN A CAT SCAN, THEN THE DR TELLING ME I HAD TO HAVE SURGERY OR I WAS GOING TO DIE, HE TOLD ME I COULD DIE ON THE TABLE, STROKE OUT OR I MAY BE PARALYZED THE REST OF MY LIFE.

I CLOSED MY EYES AND ASKED GOD TO TAKE CARE OF ME AND THE SURGEON, I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS 14 HOURS AFTER I HAD REACHED PRESBY. I OPENED MY EYES AND TOLD THE DR. “WELL WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR”. I SPOKE TO MY SONS AND MY WONDERFUL HUSBAND AND TOLD THEM NOT TO DARE CRY BUT TO ONLY BELIEVE I WAS GOING TO BE FINE, THEN TO SURGERY I WENT.AFTER A WEEK I WOKE UP WITH A TRACH AND COULDN’T SPEAK A WORD. THE HAD PUT A GRAFT IN MY AORTA. I SPENT A MONTH IN THE HOSPITAL, FROM ICU TO REHAB , THEN ON FEB.12TH I WAS DISCHARGED WALKING VERY SLIGHTLY WITH A WALKER.

I WAS HOME FOR ONE WEEK THEN BACK TO THE HOSPITAL WITH A COLLAPSED LUNG, ANOTHER WEEK WITH TWO CHEST TUBES, THEN I GOT TO GO HOME. I HAVE BEEN HOME AND REHABBING VERY WELL, I AM WALKING ON MY OWN, WITH NERVE DAMAGE TO MY LEGS AND MY BLADDER, BUT MY DR SEEMS TO THINK THAT ALL WILL COME BACK, I AM ON ANTENNAL 3 TIMES A DAY TO KEEP MY PRESSURE DOWN AND I AM STILL SELF CATHERIZING BUT I AM SO GLAD TO BE ALIVE, IT HAS CHANGED MY WHOLE WAY OF THINKING TOWARD LIFE AND I GIVE GOD ALL THE GLORY.

MY CT HAS BEEN GOOD SO FAR AND I AM ON AN ASPIRIN A DAY TO PREVENT PLATELETS BEING THROWN THAT WAS CAUSING MY EYESIGHT IN MY LEFT EYE TO GO BLIND. I AM BLESSED
